If unreliable conclusions enter the scientific literature, later research may build on a false assumption, wasting time and resources. Policymakers can also be affected when they use published studies to justify regulations or public programs. In this way, weak research practices can slow scientific progress and lead important decisions to rest on evidence that has not been adequately tested.

One response is to require researchers to register their study plans before collecting or analyzing data and to encourage greater sharing of data, methods, and analytical procedures. These practices can make it easier to compare the final study with its original design and allow other researchers to examine how results were produced. However, strict rules may not suit every field. Exploratory research often depends on changing questions as new patterns appear, and fixed preregistration could limit useful discovery. Preparing detailed plans, organizing data for public release, and documenting every analytical step can also require considerable time. As a result, greater transparency can improve confidence in research, but overly rigid requirements may reduce flexibility and increase the burden on scientists.
