The growing demand for satellite-based communication, navigation, and Earth observation has led companies and governments to place increasing numbers of small satellites into orbit. Some projects involve launching hundreds or even thousands of satellites as part of a single network. Although these systems can expand access to digital services and provide more frequent information about conditions on Earth, they also make the space around the planet more crowded. Satellites that stop working may remain in orbit for years, while collisions and equipment failures can create fragments that continue traveling at extremely high speeds.
As the number of objects in orbit rises, so does the possibility that satellites will strike one another or existing debris. Even a small piece of metal can seriously damage a working satellite because of the speed at which objects move in space. A collision can also produce many new fragments, increasing the risk of further accidents. If such incidents become common, some frequently used orbits could become increasingly dangerous. This would threaten services that modern societies depend on, including communications, weather forecasting, navigation, and the collection of information used in agriculture and disaster response.
Governments have begun considering measures to reduce these dangers. One approach is to require satellite operators to remove spacecraft from orbit soon after their missions end. Countries are also discussing stronger rules for sharing tracking data and coordinating maneuvers when two objects are likely to collide. However, international control of space activity remains limited, and operators are subject to different national requirements. Moreover, such rules mainly address new satellites. Removing the large amount of debris already in orbit would require specialized technology capable of locating, approaching, and capturing fast-moving objects. Developing and operating such systems would be technically difficult and extremely expensive, making large-scale cleanup uncertain.
