Farmers use several methods to protect crops from insects that damage leaves, fruit, or roots. Chemical pesticides are common, but another approach is to use insects that naturally attack crop pests. Farmers may release ladybugs, predatory mites, or small wasps into fields or greenhouses. These helpful insects feed on harmful species or interrupt their life cycle, reducing the number of pests around crops.

Supporters believe this method has several advantages. It can reduce the need for chemical pesticides when beneficial insects keep pest populations under control. As a result, fewer chemicals may be applied to crops and the surrounding environment. There is another benefit. Many beneficial insects attack only certain types of pests. Farmers can therefore target a particular problem without harming as many other insects that live in the same area.

However, critics point out a problem. Farmers cannot control beneficial insects as precisely as they can control a chemical treatment. Temperature, rain, and other conditions may reduce their activity, and released insects may move away from the crops. Pest numbers can also rise faster than the beneficial insects can respond. In such cases, crop damage may continue even after the insects have been introduced, making the method less reliable when rapid control is needed.
