Algae can be grown in transparent panels filled with water and nutrients. Recently, some building projects have begun placing such panels on exterior walls. Sunlight reaches the algae through the panels, allowing them to grow through photosynthesis. The algae can later be collected and used for products such as fuel or other materials. This approach turns parts of a building that would normally have no productive use into places where algae can be cultivated.

Supporters point to several benefits. Because the panels are attached vertically to buildings, large areas of open land are not required. This makes it possible to produce algae even in crowded cities where available ground space is limited. There is another advantage. As algae grow, they take in carbon dioxide during photosynthesis. Carbon dioxide from the surrounding air or from the building can therefore be absorbed, reducing the amount released into the environment.

However, critics point out some problems. Installing the system requires special glass panels, pipes, control equipment, and structural support, which can make construction much more expensive. In addition, algae may build up on the inside of the panels over time. The panels must therefore be cleaned regularly, while pumps and sensors also need to be checked to keep the system working properly, creating a heavier workload for building operators.
