Airports and airlines are looking for ways to reduce the environmental impact of aviation. One option is sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, which can be made from used cooking oil, plant waste, or other non-fossil materials. It is processed so that it can be mixed with ordinary jet fuel and supplied to aircraft through many of the systems already used at airports.

Supporters believe SAF has several advantages. The materials used to produce it may release less additional carbon dioxide over their full life cycle than fossil-based jet fuel. Increasing its use can therefore reduce aviation emissions without requiring passengers to travel less. There is another benefit. Because SAF can be blended with conventional fuel, many existing aircraft can use it without major changes to their engines. Airports can introduce it gradually while continuing normal operations.

Despite this, critics have concerns. Supplies of waste oil and other acceptable materials are limited, while the demand for aviation fuel is extremely large. Producing enough SAF for widespread use may therefore be difficult. There is another problem. The fuel requires special processing at facilities that are still uncommon. This makes SAF much more expensive than ordinary jet fuel.
