Researchers need accurate information about which species live in rivers, lakes, forests, and other natural environments. Traditionally, they have often relied on direct observation or captured animals for identification. Recently, environmental DNA, or eDNA, surveys have become more common. These surveys examine genetic material left behind by living things in water or soil, allowing researchers to look for signs of species without seeing the animals themselves.

Supporters say this method has several advantages. Researchers only need to collect environmental samples, so they do not have to catch or handle the animals being studied. This allows surveys to be carried out without physically disturbing the target organisms. There is another benefit. Even very small traces of genetic material can sometimes be detected in a sample. As a result, researchers may discover species that are difficult to find through ordinary observation.

However, critics point out some limitations. The surveys can detect DNA released from dead organisms. This makes it difficult to tell whether the animal is now living or not. In addition, genetic material can move through the environment. In rivers or coastal waters, currents may carry it away from where the organism actually lives. Therefore, the place where DNA is detected may not match the species' true location.
