Solar panels are usually placed on roofs or on land used only for producing electricity. Another method, called agrivoltaics, involves installing panels above farmland while crops continue to grow below them. The panels are raised high enough for sunlight, rain, workers, and farming equipment to reach the fields. This approach is now being tested in a growing number of agricultural regions where suitable land for energy projects is limited.

Supporters believe agrivoltaics can be positive. This system can produce both food and electricity on the same area of land. Therefore, it allows limited land resources to be used more efficiently. Some crops may also benefit from partial shade. During very hot weather, panels can reduce water loss from the soil and protect plants from extreme sunlight. This may help crops continue growing during periods of unusually high temperatures.

Despite this, critics point out problems. Panels used above crops need tall, strong supports so that people and farm machines can pass underneath them. These structures are more expensive than those used in ordinary solar projects. In addition, the system may not suit crops that need strong direct sunlight, such as wheat or rice. Therefore, the panels may limit what farmers can grow.
