To reduce this problem, manufacturers are developing fishing gear made from materials that gradually break down in natural conditions but remain strong enough for normal use by fishing crews at sea.

Supporters say biodegradable gear could provide important benefits. If lost equipment breaks down over time, less plastic remains in the ocean and the amount of long-lasting marine waste may fall. Also, this can limit damage caused by abandoned nets and traps. Such gear may continue catching fish, turtles, or other animals after fishermen have lost control of it, but decomposition can shorten that dangerous period.

However, critics point out problems. Materials designed to break down may be weaker than ordinary plastic, especially after repeated exposure to salt water, sunlight, and heavy loads. Gear that fails too early can reduce catches or create safety risks. Manufacturing costs are also higher because producers need special materials and testing. These expenses may make the equipment difficult for small fishing businesses to purchase regularly.
