Buildings often lose heat in winter and become too warm in summer, increasing the need for heating and air-conditioning. To address this problem, some architects are using phase-change materials, commonly called PCMs. These building materials absorb and store heat when temperatures rise and release it when temperatures fall. They may be installed inside walls, floors, or ceilings during construction or renovation.

Supporters say PCMs offer several benefits. During warm periods, they absorb some of the heat that would otherwise raise indoor temperatures. The stored heat can be released later when the surrounding air becomes cooler, reducing the amount of time that heating and cooling systems need to operate. PCMs can also slow sudden changes in room temperature. This helps indoor spaces remain more stable throughout the day and night.

However, critics point out possible drawbacks. Installing PCMs can raise construction costs because buildings may need special products and skilled workers. Existing structures may require additional changes before the materials can be fitted properly. Also, disposal can be difficult. Some PCMs are combined with plastic, metal, or chemical substances. As a result, it is difficult to separate the different materials when a building is demolished.
