Many factories release large amounts of carbon dioxide when they produce steel, cement, chemicals, or other goods. Carbon capture and storage, commonly called CCS, is attracting attention as a way to reduce these emissions. The technology separates CO2 from industrial gases, transports it through pipelines or ships, and stores it deep underground instead of releasing it into the atmosphere.

Supporters say CCS can provide important benefits. One benefit is that it can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere from factories. Special equipment captures CO2 before industrial gases leave a facility and prepares it for underground storage. CCS may also be useful in industries where emissions are difficult to avoid. Steel, cement, and chemical production creates CO2 during manufacturing, so capturing the gas allows factories to keep producing necessary materials with lower emissions.

Despite these benefits, critics point out a problem. Under CCS, carbon dioxide is stored deep underground. However, if storage sites are damaged by earthquakes or ground movement, cracks or other pathways may form. These pathways could then allow the stored gas to escape and enter nearby soil or water. Consequently, this may negatively affect plants, animals, and other living organisms in the area.
