Wastewater flowing continuously through underground pipes usually remains warmer than the surrounding outdoor air during cold winter months. New systems called wastewater heat recovery systems are beginning to capture this heat and use it in homes, offices, schools, or public buildings. Heat exchangers and pumps transfer energy from sewage without allowing wastewater to enter the building's heating system.

Supporters highlight several advantages. Using heat that would otherwise be lost reduces the electricity or fuel needed to warm buildings. This may lower overall energy consumption, especially in districts with large and steady flows of wastewater. Also, sewage temperatures are more stable than outdoor temperatures. Therefore, unlike solar or wind energy, the heat is available at night and during cloudy, cold, or calm weather.

That said, critics raise some concerns. One problem is that installing the equipment in established neighborhoods can be difficult. Streets may need to be opened, and workers must avoid existing pipes, cables, roads, and foundations, and some older buildings may require changes. In addition, the work can be costly. Special machinery, skilled workers, and long construction periods may raise expenses, especially when underground space is limited or unexpected obstacles are found.
