Food manufacturers are looking for new sources of protein as concerns grow about the environmental impact of traditional livestock farming. This approach is attracting attention as a possible alternative to meat-based protein.

Supporters of using insect protein point to several advantages. Raising insects produces far fewer greenhouse gas emissions than keeping animals such as cattle or pigs. This could help reduce the environmental impact of food production. Moreover, insects can be raised efficiently in small spaces. They can be kept in stacked containers at high density, so producers do not need the large areas of land required for conventional livestock farming.

Having said that, critics have some concerns. Many consumers feel uncomfortable about eating insects and thus may avoid products containing insect-based ingredients. Such negative feelings could slow their spread as common foods. There is also a health concern. Some insect proteins can cause allergic reactions, especially in people who are allergic to shellfish such as shrimp or crab. In serious cases, these reactions may become severe, so manufacturers need to provide clear information about possible allergy risks.
