Forests are being lost or damaged in many parts of the world because of fires, logging, and environmental change. Planting trees by hand can require large numbers of workers and considerable time, particularly after widespread destruction. As a result, the use of drones for planting trees is spreading. These aircraft can carry seeds and release them over selected areas.

Supporters of drone planting emphasize the benefits. To begin with, drones can cover wide areas in a short period of time. A small team can operate several aircraft and plant seeds much faster than workers moving across the ground. Another advantage is that drones can reach places that are difficult or dangerous for people to enter. They may operate on steep slopes, damaged land, or areas without roads, allowing planting work to continue in locations that would otherwise be neglected.

However, critics point to a major concern. Seeds dropped from the air may not receive enough water, suitable soil, or protection from animals. This is because some may land in poor locations or be carried away by wind and rain. As a result, only a limited share of the planted seeds may grow into healthy trees.
