Growing demand for air travel has led many airports near major cities to operate flights early in the morning and late at night. Extending operating hours can help airlines use aircraft more efficiently and provide passengers with a wider range of departure and arrival times. However, airports are often surrounded by residential areas, and people living nearby may be exposed repeatedly to the sound of aircraft taking off and landing. Noise can be especially disruptive at night, when even brief periods of loud sound may interrupt sleep.

Frequent nighttime noise can affect more than comfort. Repeated sleep disturbance may leave residents tired during the day and, over time, may contribute to broader health problems. Constant exposure can also reduce quality of life by making it difficult for people to rest at home or enjoy outdoor spaces. As dissatisfaction grows, local opposition to airport expansion may become stronger. Communities may resist new runways or increased flight numbers if they believe further development will expose them to even more noise. This can create conflict between the economic benefits of air transport and the interests of people living around airports.

Governments and airport authorities can try to reduce these problems by limiting the number of flights allowed during nighttime hours and charging higher fees to aircraft that produce more noise. Such policies can encourage airlines to use quieter planes and schedule more flights during the day. However, restricting operating hours can reduce airline efficiency by limiting when aircraft and crews can be used. It may also make it harder to coordinate international connections, especially when flights must link with airports in distant time zones. Fewer late-night or early-morning services can also reduce passenger and cargo activity, potentially affecting businesses and jobs that depend on airport operations. As a result, noise controls must balance residents' well-being with the transportation and economic benefits provided by flexible airport schedules.
