Large cargo ships often take seawater into special tanks when they need additional weight to remain stable during a voyage. This ballast water is usually collected near the port of departure and released when cargo is loaded or when the vessel reaches another destination. Along with the water, however, ships can unintentionally take in tiny marine organisms, including larvae and plankton. When the water is discharged in a distant region, some of these organisms may survive and establish populations in an environment where they did not previously exist. Growing international shipping has therefore increased opportunities for species to cross natural geographic barriers.
Once introduced, non-native organisms can cause serious ecological and economic damage. Some may reproduce rapidly because local predators cannot control them, while others compete with native species for food and habitat. This can reduce local biodiversity and alter relationships within coastal ecosystems. Fisheries may also suffer if invasive species reduce commercially important fish or damage areas used for breeding. Such changes can persist for many years and may be extremely difficult to reverse after a new species becomes firmly established. As a result, communities that depend on fishing can face both environmental losses and declining income.
International rules now require many vessels to manage ballast water before releasing it. Ships may be fitted with treatment systems that use physical or chemical methods to remove or kill organisms carried in the tanks. These measures are intended to reduce the number of species transported between regions. However, installing and maintaining the necessary equipment can be expensive, especially for older vessels. Treatment systems may also fail to eliminate every microscopic organism under all operating conditions. In addition, inspecting ships and confirming compliance across ports worldwide requires extensive resources and international cooperation. These practical difficulties mean that regulations can lower the risk of biological invasions without removing it entirely.
