Gene editing is a technology that changes selected parts of an organism's genetic information. Unlike genetic modification, it can alter particular characteristics without introducing genes from another species. Researchers are applying this method to crops and other foods in order to change features such as growth, shape, or nutritional content. Some gene-edited foods are already being developed for farming and commercial use.

Supporters believe the technology is beneficial. By changing characteristics related to plant growth or the shape of grain-producing parts, researchers may develop crops that produce more food from the same area of farmland. This could increase harvests without requiring farmers to expand their fields. There is another advantage. Gene editing can also raise the amount of certain nutrients or naturally occurring compounds in food. For example, developers may create products that contain higher levels of substances such as GABA, a compound said to help people relax.

However, critics have concerns. Gene-edited crops may reproduce with related wild plants if pollen or seeds spread beyond farms. New characteristics could then enter wild populations and disturb existing ecological relationships. There is another problem. Gene-edited foods have not been eaten by humans for many generations. Researchers therefore still have limited information about the effects of consuming some of these foods over very long periods.
