Supporters point to several benefits. First, the systems can reduce traffic jams. When many cars gather on one road, green lights can be extended, while quieter roads receive shorter periods. This helps vehicles move through busy areas more smoothly and may reduce the time drivers spend waiting. In addition, AI traffic lights can give priority to emergency vehicles. The system can detect an approaching ambulance or fire engine and create a series of green lights along its route. As a result, emergency workers may reach people in danger more quickly.

Despite these benefits, critics point out a major drawback. Installing cameras, sensors, communication equipment, and control software requires considerable public spending. The systems also need regular maintenance and technical updates. Smaller cities may struggle to cover these continuing costs, especially when equipment breaks or must be replaced.
