Young people make financial decisions soon after leaving school, including choosing bank accounts, using credit, paying taxes, or managing living expenses. Some education systems are making financial education a required part of the school curriculum. Lessons may cover budgeting, saving, borrowing, interest, insurance, and common financial risks. The subject can be taught separately or included within mathematics, social studies, or other courses.
Supporters say compulsory financial education has several benefits. Students can learn basic skills before they begin making important decisions about loans, contracts, or household budgets. This may help them make financial decisions more carefully. There is another advantage. Required lessons give all students some access to financial knowledge, including those whose families may not talk about money at home. Therefore, these lessons could improve overall financial literacy in society.
However, critics have concerns. School timetables are already crowded, so adding required financial lessons may reduce time available for other subjects. There is another problem. Financial products, payment technology, and regulations can change quickly. Teaching materials may become outdated, and students could remember rules or examples that no longer match the choices they face later. As a result, some students may leave school with financial information that is already out of date.
