Electricity is carried over long distances by transmission lines supported by tall towers. These lines must be checked regularly for broken parts, loose connections, or damage caused by storms. Traditionally, workers inspect them from the ground, climb towers, or use helicopters. Some power companies now send drones with cameras and other sensors along the lines to collect detailed images for later examination by engineers.

Supporters believe drone inspections have several advantages. Drones can examine high or remote parts of the network without requiring workers to climb towers or approach live electrical equipment. This reduces the risks of electrical shock and falls. There is another benefit. A drone can follow long sections of a line and record many images quickly. This allows engineers to review the results and identify damage before it develops into a larger failure.

Despite these benefits, critics point out two limitations. Drones cannot perform some checks that humans can carry out directly. For example, they cannot tap equipment to detect unusual sounds that may indicate hidden problems. In addition, they are unable to operate safely in strong winds or heavy rain. This can force companies to postpone or change inspection schedules.
