These systems examine recorded images and automatically identify animals, helping researchers estimate how many individuals of each species live in an area.

Supporters say this method has several advantages. Unlike human observers, AI-based cameras can continue monitoring animals at night or during bad weather. This makes it possible to collect information for longer periods without depending heavily on working conditions. There is another benefit. Researchers do not need to catch animals or attach tracking devices to their bodies. As a result, the survey can collect useful information while causing less stress or physical disturbance to wildlife.

However, critics point out a problem. There are various factors that can reduce the accuracy of AI identification. For example, heavy rain, moving plants, or darkness at night may make recorded images difficult to analyze correctly. As a result, the system may mistake one animal for another or fail to recognize an animal completely. Such errors could make estimates of wildlife populations less reliable.
