The machines then pull out those plants or spray them with a small amount of weed killer.

Supporters say AI weeding robots are beneficial. Farmers usually spray weed killers over large areas, including places where no weeds are growing. Robots can target individual weeds, so fewer chemicals are needed. There is another advantage. The machines can work for long periods without becoming tired. This could reduce the amount of difficult physical work done by farmers, especially on large farms where removing weeds by hand takes many hours.

However, critics have concerns. AI systems may not always identify plants correctly. Young crops and weeds can look similar, and shadows or damaged leaves may make recognition more difficult. If a robot mistakes a crop for a weed, it may pull out the plant or spray it. Such errors could reduce the amount of food produced.
