Large glass windows are common in modern cities because they provide natural light and create open-looking building designs. However, glass can reflect the sky, trees, and other vegetation, making the surface appear to be part of the surrounding environment. Birds may fail to recognize the window as a solid barrier and fly toward the reflected image at high speed. These collisions can occur on office towers, apartment buildings, schools, and other structures, especially where large glass surfaces are located near parks or planted areas.

The consequences can be significant. Many birds die immediately after striking windows, while others suffer injuries that prevent them from surviving later. Migratory species may be especially vulnerable because they pass through unfamiliar urban areas in large numbers and may encounter many reflective buildings along their routes. If collisions occur repeatedly in the same places, they can contribute to declines in local or regional bird populations. The problem is difficult to notice because dead or injured birds may be removed quickly by predators, cleaning staff, or weather, causing the true scale of mortality to be underestimated.

One response is to introduce bird-safe design standards for new buildings and renovations. Windows can use visible patterns, coatings, screens, or external structures that help birds recognize glass as an obstacle rather than open space. These measures can significantly reduce collisions without eliminating windows entirely. However, applying them to every existing building can be expensive, especially when large areas of glass must be replaced or modified. Some designs may also reduce the amount of daylight entering a building or alter its appearance in ways owners and architects dislike. As a result, bird-safe construction can lower wildlife deaths, but wider adoption may require balancing environmental benefits with cost and design priorities.
