Large livestock operations produce substantial amounts of manure, which is often stored before being used as fertilizer on farmland. During storage and after manure is spread, nitrogen compounds can break down and release ammonia gas into the air. Once emitted, ammonia can travel beyond the farm and react with other pollutants in the atmosphere. These reactions may create fine particulate matter, allowing emissions from animal waste to contribute to air-pollution problems over a wider area than the farm itself.

The effects can extend to both human health and the natural environment. Fine particles formed partly from ammonia can be inhaled deeply into the lungs and are associated with respiratory and cardiovascular problems. High ammonia levels can also damage sensitive vegetation and, after being deposited onto land or water, add excess nitrogen to ecosystems. This can change soil conditions and disturb the balance of plant species in nearby habitats. As livestock production becomes more concentrated, communities surrounding large facilities may therefore face growing concerns about air quality and environmental degradation.

One response is to reduce the amount of ammonia that escapes from manure before and during its use as fertilizer. Storage tanks or pits can be covered or sealed, while improved spreading equipment can place manure closer to the soil instead of spraying it broadly across the surface. These methods can lower emissions and make better use of the nitrogen contained in animal waste. However, installing covered storage systems and specialized spreading machinery can require significant investment. Large producers may be better able to absorb these costs, but smaller farms often operate with limited financial resources. Maintenance and training can add further expenses. As a result, stricter ammonia-control measures may improve local air quality, but they can place a heavy economic burden on small livestock farmers.
