Growing demand for seafood has encouraged the expansion of large-scale fish farming in coastal waters and rivers. Aquaculture can provide a stable supply of fish without relying entirely on wild stocks, but farms must keep large numbers of animals within cages, ponds, or other enclosed facilities. Storms, floods, or structural failures can damage these systems and allow farmed fish to escape into surrounding waters. Once outside, they may spread over wide areas and come into contact with wild populations that evolved under local environmental conditions.

Escaped fish can affect native populations in several ways. They may compete with wild fish for food, shelter, or breeding areas, reducing the resources available to naturally occurring species. If farmed and wild fish are closely related, they may also interbreed. Because farmed stocks are often selected for traits that are useful in captivity rather than survival in the wild, such mixing can alter the genetic characteristics of local populations. Over time, these changes may reduce their ability to adapt to natural conditions. Large escapes can also disturb ecological relationships by increasing the number of fish in an area and changing patterns of predation or competition.

Governments can reduce these risks by requiring stronger construction standards for aquaculture facilities and introducing systems that make escaped fish easier to identify and trace. Better cages, barriers, and monitoring can lower the chance of large releases and help authorities respond more quickly when escapes occur. However, no facility can be completely protected from extreme weather, especially as storms become more intense in some regions. Upgrading farms to withstand severe conditions can also be expensive, particularly for smaller operators. Tracking systems add further costs and may be difficult to apply consistently across many facilities. As a result, stronger safeguards can reduce escapes but cannot eliminate the environmental risks associated with fish farming.
