Expanding road networks are dividing forests and grasslands that were once connected into smaller and more isolated areas. Highways can form major barriers for wildlife because animals often need to move between habitats to find food, water, or breeding partners. When they attempt to cross busy roads, they may be struck by vehicles. Some species instead avoid roads completely, reducing the area they can use and limiting access to important resources. As development continues, these effects can separate animal populations that previously interacted more freely.
Habitat fragmentation can have serious consequences over time. Frequent road deaths may reduce local populations, especially for species that reproduce slowly or travel over large territories. Isolation can also limit breeding between groups on opposite sides of a highway. When genetic exchange declines, populations may become less diverse and therefore less able to adapt to disease, environmental change, or other pressures. Smaller and more isolated groups can also be more vulnerable to disappearing after fires, droughts, or other local disturbances. In this way, transportation infrastructure can threaten the long-term survival of wildlife even when substantial habitat remains on both sides of a road.
One solution is to build wildlife crossings that allow animals to move safely over or under highways. These structures can reconnect separated habitats and reduce collisions if they are placed where animals naturally travel. However, designing effective crossings requires detailed knowledge of migration routes and the behavior of different species. A poorly located structure may receive little use. Large overpasses or tunnels can also be expensive to construct and maintain, particularly on long road networks with many fragmented areas. Because resources are limited, authorities cannot install major crossings everywhere. Protecting wildlife therefore requires careful decisions about where such structures will provide the greatest ecological benefit.
