Large-scale clothing production often requires substantial amounts of water and chemicals to create fabrics in many different colors. During dyeing, water is used to carry pigments and other substances through the material, and large volumes of wastewater are produced afterward. If this wastewater is discharged without adequate treatment, dyes and other chemicals can enter nearby rivers and gradually accumulate in the aquatic environment. Because some of these substances break down slowly, pollution may persist even after a factory reduces its discharges.

The effects can extend beyond the appearance of the water. Chemical residues may harm fish and other aquatic organisms by changing water conditions or interfering with their growth and reproduction. Polluted rivers can also affect communities that depend on the same water for farming, washing, or other daily needs. If contamination lowers water quality, farmers may have difficulty using river water safely on crops, while households may need to find alternative sources. In areas where many textile factories operate close together, repeated discharges from several facilities can place even greater pressure on local water systems.

One solution is to install advanced treatment systems inside factories so that wastewater can be cleaned and reused before it leaves the site. Recycling water can reduce both the amount of freshwater factories need and the quantity of pollutants released into rivers. However, such systems can be expensive to build, operate, and maintain. Large manufacturers may be able to absorb these costs, but smaller factories often work with narrow profit margins in a highly competitive clothing industry. For them, investing in sophisticated treatment equipment may threaten their financial survival, particularly when buyers demand consistently low prices. As a result, stricter wastewater requirements may improve environmental protection while also creating economic difficulties for producers with limited resources.
