Geothermal power uses heat stored beneath the ground to generate electricity and has attracted attention as a low-carbon source that can operate regardless of weather conditions. In some projects, however, operators inject water deep underground or pump hot fluids back to the surface. These activities can change pressure within rock formations and nearby faults. In certain regions, the resulting stress changes have triggered earthquakes that would otherwise have been unlikely to occur at that time or place. Most such events are small, but the possibility of stronger shaking has raised concerns around some geothermal developments.
If a larger induced earthquake occurs, the consequences can extend beyond physical damage. Buildings, roads, and other infrastructure may be affected, while residents can become anxious about repeated tremors near their homes. Even when damage is limited, frequent seismic activity can reduce public confidence in geothermal projects and lead to stronger opposition to further development. This can make it harder for governments and energy companies to expand geothermal capacity, even though the technology can contribute to stable electricity supplies and lower carbon emissions.
To manage the risk, operators can continuously monitor seismic activity around geothermal sites and adjust their operations when unusual patterns appear. If earthquakes exceed a certain level, companies may reduce the amount of water being injected or temporarily stop the project. These measures can lower the chance that continued activity will worsen the situation. However, important uncertainties remain. Underground fault systems are complex and cannot be mapped perfectly, especially several kilometers below the surface. Scientists also cannot reliably determine whether a series of small tremors will remain minor or develop into a larger event. As a result, monitoring can reduce risk but cannot guarantee that damaging earthquakes will be avoided entirely during continued operation.
