Climate change and population growth are increasing pressure on farmers to produce more food under increasingly difficult conditions. Droughts are becoming more frequent in some regions, while plant diseases can spread rapidly and damage large areas of crops. Farmers therefore need varieties that can continue producing high yields despite such stresses. Traditional breeding has long been used to improve useful characteristics, but developing new varieties in this way can take many years. As environmental conditions change quickly, conventional methods may not always produce suitable crops fast enough to meet new agricultural challenges.

Unstable crop production can have consequences far beyond individual farms. When harvests fall, the supply of important foods may decline and prices can rise. This can place particular pressure on countries that depend heavily on imports, since they are vulnerable to shortages or price increases in international markets. Poorer households may also be forced to spend a larger share of their income on basic food. If extreme weather and crop diseases become more common, repeated production losses could make it harder for governments to maintain reliable food supplies and protect consumers from sudden increases in cost.

One possible response is the use of gene-editing technology to develop crops with desirable characteristics more quickly. Scientists can make targeted changes to plant genes in order to improve resistance to drought, disease, or other environmental pressures. Such crops could help stabilize agricultural production and reduce the risk of severe harvest losses. However, concerns remain about their wider use. The long-term effects of releasing edited plants into natural ecosystems are not yet fully understood. In addition, some critics worry that if a small number of companies control access to seeds and related technology, farmers may become increasingly dependent on those firms for future production.
