Intensive care units treat patients who need close observation and medical decisions. Smaller hospitals may not always have critical-care specialists available at all times. Remote intensive care systems connect these hospitals with specialists in another location. Cameras, microphones, patient monitors, and electronic records allow remote teams to observe conditions, speak with local staff, and provide advice during treatment.

Supporters believe these systems have several advantages. Hospitals in remote areas can gain access to specialist knowledge without requiring a critical-care doctor to be physically present at every moment. This may help local teams make difficult decisions. There is another benefit. Remote teams can watch information from several patients and identify important changes in heart rate, breathing, or other measurements. An additional set of trained eyes may notice warning signs that busy local staff could otherwise miss.

However, critics have concerns. The system depends on reliable networks, cameras, software, and access to accurate patient data. A technical failure or delayed information can interrupt communication at an important moment. There is another problem. Since remote specialists cannot physically examine a patient or perform an emergency procedure themselves, they must depend on staff at the hospital to carry out hands-on treatment, which may limit the value of remote support in rapidly changing situations.
