Many university students choose a major before they fully understand their academic interests or future career goals. After beginning their studies, some discover that another field suits them better. To address this, some universities are making it easier for students to change majors after enrollment. Under these systems, students can move to a different academic department and transfer some of the credits they have already earned.

Supporters say such flexibility offers several benefits. For example, students can correct a poor match between their original major and their actual interests. If they discover a field they truly want to study, they can change direction instead of remaining in an unsuitable program. There is another benefit. Students who study subjects that genuinely interest them often have a lot of motivation to study. Thus, they may become more engaged in classes and more willing to deepen their knowledge.

However, critics point to some drawbacks. Credits earned in the original major may not always count toward the new one, which can delay graduation. Students may need extra semesters to complete required courses. In addition, changing majors can make academic schedules much busier. To make up for missing credits, students may have to take more classes, practical training, or other required coursework within a limited period.
